A study has been made of the effects of vit. A deficiency on the growth of various bones, chiefly the basi-occipital, labyrinthine capsule and sphenoid, in puppies, and also of the restoration of normal bone growth on resupplying vit. A to the deficient animals. It has been shown that the general function of vit; A in this regard is to control the shape of growing bone and especially its fine moulding by influencing the position and activity of osteo-clasts and osteoblasts. Addition of vit. A to the diet of an A-deficient animal during growth caused a return of osteo-clastic and osteoblastic activity to the surfaces where it is normally found, the object of the reaction being to restore the normal shape of the dysplastic bones formed during the deficient period. The change in position of activity and in number of osteoclasts and osteoblasts resulting from vit. A deficiency was orderly and usually a modification or even reversal at the effective surfaces, bone deposition occurring where previously there was either absorption or no bone activity. Although in general vit. A deficiency causes a general thickening and dysplasia of bone, the mode of production of this abnormal state varies, as was shown in the 3 regions already mentioned; recovery changes on adding vit. A were also different in each case. The altered shape of bones adjacent to the nervous system could destroy cranial and spinal nerves, but the recovery changes in dysplastic bones on the addition of vit. A to the diet were found to take place independently of the condition of adjacent nervous tissue.
