Transmission electron microscopy studies of epidermal cell mucilages of roots of various species [Pinus radiata, Paspalum and Trifolium subterraneum] show that the nature of mucilage and the boundaries between the cell wall and the soil depend on the age of the epidermal cells concerned and the degree of bacterial lysis experienced.
