Correlation of areas occupied by mitochondria and myofibrils has been studied in electron microscopic section of myocardium of the left ventricle of rabbits 2,7,45 days and 8 months after the onset of the hyperfunction of the heart produced by aortic stenosis. In the first stage of the process ( 2 and 7 days after the onset of the hyperfunction )f the heart) a significant augmentation of the mitochondrial mass along with a destruction of a part of the organelles arises in myo-cardial cells. In the second stage (45 days after the onset of the hyperfunction of the heart) considerable growth of the myocardial mass is followed by normalization of the mass and structure of the mitochondria. In the third stage (8 months after the onset of the hyperfunction of the heart) the destruction of mitochondria accompanied by a decrease of their mass is again observed. Correlation of the indicated results with data obtained on hyperfunction of other organs suggests that in the process of adaptation of the differentiated cell to the increased level of functioning the energy-producing structures -mitochondria-are augmented and later undergo wear earlier than structures immediately effectuating the function.
