The twentieth century has seen the rapid growth of business organisations with their ever increasing influence on the environment. Many span the globe in their operations and have budgets greater than the GNP of several nations. While size generally means power, it is also true that the giant is cumbersome, inflexible and slow to change. For long term survival the business organisation must therefore be constantly vigilant in monitoring changes in its operating environment and adjusting its direction. Directing and controlling these organisations is an extremely demanding and highly complex task. Added to this burden, almost as a reaction to their operations, is the increasing influence of government bureaucracy. The theme of the book is thus immense-and the more challenging because no one, as yet, has done it justice, though some useful pointers emerged in the mid-sixties in Professor Ansoff's' Corporate Strategy'. It is interesting to note, that the direction and need for Corporate Strategy has changed somewhat from Ansoffs' initial writing, when the theme was then directed to growth and expansion, as against today when the emphasis is very much on maintenance and survival. On leafing through this book, as one would do in a book shop prior to purchase, it gives the impression of a clear concise treatment of this rather complex subject. However, on closer examination the style and method of presentation used by Dr Klingen would probably make many readers give up after the first few chapters.
