Lattice defects in quartz are accumulated through geologic time while being created by natural radiation from radioactive elements. ESR (electron spin resonance) detects oxygen vacancies in quartz as a signal of the E' center (an unpaired electron at an oxygen vacancy). This method was employed together with CL (cathode luminescence) to investigate the past migration of uranium at the Kanyemba uranium deposit, Zimbabwe. ESR signal intensities are larger in core samples with higher uranium concentrations, in which CL rims are also observed. The ESR intensities, plotted as a function of natural radiation dose rates estimated from the present U, Th, and Κ concentrations, consist of two lines. If the lines are interpreted as two isochrons, the age of the uranium migration is 2% of that age of the sandstone, as young as 5 Ma.
