A taxonomic investigation of the bacteria, 453 strains of gram negative and mono polar flagellated rods, taking part in the precipitation of calcium carbonate, is described in this paper. The method of classification according to Bergey's Manual of Deter minative Bacteriology and SHEWAN'S scheme was adopted in this study. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. Four hundred and fifty three strains belonged to the 3 genera, Alginomonas (116 strains), Vibrio (5 strains) and Pseudomonas (332 strains). 2. One hundred and sixteen strains belonging to the genus Alginomonas were identified as A. fucicola (66 strains), A. nonfermentans (26 strains), A . alginovora (23 strains) or A. alginica (1 strain). 3. All the strains belonging to the genus Vibrio were identified as V. phytoplanktis. 4. Three hundred and twenty four strains among the 332 strains belonging to the genus Pseudomonas were identified as P. calcis or P. calciprecipitans and 8 strains could not be identified.
