Because propranolol decreases portal venous pressure, it may prevent gastrointestinal bleeding associated with portal hypertension. Patients (74) with cirrhosis, admitted because of gastrointestinal bleeding, either oral propranolol in doses that reduced the heart rate by 25% (38 patients) or a placebo (36). The proportion of patients free of recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding 1 yr after the study was 96% in the propranolol group and 50% in the placebo group (P < 0.0001). Evidently continuous oral propranolol is effective in preventing recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding in cirrhosis patients.
