Polyploid plants with large chromosome numbers must have originated from plants with short chromosomes; and those having long chromosomes and large chromosome numbers are usually allopolyploids. Autotetraploids pro-duced from plants with short chromosomes and with small chromosome numbers will probably be more suitable for plant-breeding work. The data presented support the theory that autopolyploids obtained from plants with long chromosomes should have lower fertility than those obtained from plants with short chromosomes, provided that in either case the plants have the same or approx. the same chromosome numbers.
