Traps are called magnetic if the magnetic force lines leave the main volume of the plasma and go off to the chamber walls or to some special receiving units. From the standpoint of containment of high-temperature plasma these traps have a large number of attractive properties. These include, first, a high permissible value of ß (ratio of the plasma and magnetic-field pressures), greater simplicity and ease of construction compared with closed system, and stability to rough hydrodynamic disturbances (in “minimum-B” systems). At the same time, open traps have also substantial shortcomings, principal among which is the considerable loss of plasma along the force lines.
