Supporting hospitals in England that are facing financial failure requires a measured approach that takes account of the local health economy rather than “quick fixes,” a new report has said.1
The report from the health policy think tank the King’s Fund has warned that the prolonged fall in funding meant that the NHS was now facing a period when even the best managed organisations would struggle to avoid financial failure. In 2013-14 just over a quarter of NHS trusts ended in deficit, with a net deficit of £241m (€300m; $390m), and foundation trusts had a gross deficit of £307m, with 27% of these trusts in the red.
