The article discusses updates on organization theory that have occurred since the publication of the article "The Case for Qualitative Research," by Gareth Morgan and Linda Smircich in the "Academy of Management Review" in 1980. They argued in their article that placing method as the main force in empirical research ignores the wider context of knowledge. They also called on social scientists to be explicit about their assumptions and how they influence their research. Assumptions on objectivism and subjectivism are said to influence whether one adopts a quantitative or qualitative, positivist or interpretive, structure or agency focus.
