The eyes of the mantis shrimp offer a unique perspective from which to view the general principles of visual design and evolution. A mainly tropical crustacean, the mantis shrimp's predatory lifestyle requires a very advanced capability of analyzing light. Understanding their unique visual abilities requires a multi-level investigations ranging from the molecules of their visual pigments, to the anatomy of their eyes, to their visual behavior and the qualities of the light in their habitat. Among the interesting features is its convoluted array of photoreceptors. This and other intricacies of the mantis shrimp's sensory experience are presented.
