Recommender systems have become a fundamental means for providing personalized guidance to users in their searches for interesting or useful objects such as movies, songs, restaurants, software requirements, and digital cameras. Although most existing recommender systems support single users, there are many scenarios where items are used by groups. The increased interest in recommendation technologies for groups motivated us to publish this book on Group Recommender Systems. The overall purpose of this book is to provide an easy-to-understand introduction to the field of group recommender systems. It is intended for persons new to the field, and also as reference material for researchers and practitioners that provides an overview of the existing state of the art and issues for future work. Included are contributions related to algorithms, user interfaces, psychological issues, and research challenges. The book entails an introductory presentation of different group recommendation algorithms. Beyond algorithms, it deals with additional relevant aspects such as group recommender user interfaces, evaluation techniques, approaches to the handling of preferences, different ways to include explanations into a group recommendation process, and psychological factors that have to be taken into account when building group recommender systems. The book also provides an overview of group recommendation scenarios that go beyond the basic ranking of alternatives. Related examples include group-based configuration, recommendation of sequences to groups, resource balancing for groups, and release planning for groups.
