My hypothesis that migraine is a blood disorder and due to a primary abnormality of platelet behaviour was published in the "Lancet" in 1978.2 The fact that changes occur in platelet behaviour during migraine attacks was already well established at that time; but the hypothesis stated that not only do changes in platelet behaviour occur during migraine attacks but that the platelet itself is abnormal in migraine sufferers and that migraine attacks occur because of this abnormality. With the collaboration of Dr. John Amess and Mr. Richard Jones* in the Department of Haematology at St. Bartholomews Hospital, London I was able to investigate the hypothesis. Dr. Barbara Wachowicz of the University of Lodz joined us for a short time in these studies. Our findings which supported the validity of the hypothesis were subsequently published in the "Lancet".3,4,5
