In Adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (A.I.S.), several studies (Walker and Dickson 1984, Le Blanc et al. 1996), have shown that the pelvis is structurally changed by the spinal disorder. In fact, a significant correlation has been observed between the three-dimensional changes in the lumbar curve and the reduction in pelvic displacement in the three spatial planes during gait. But the impact of this pelvic disorder on the walking mechanism has not been established. The goal of our study was to quantitatively evaluate the influence of scoliosis (1) on the three-dimensional (3D) pelvic position during bipedal standing, (2) on the 3D pelvic displacement during gait, and (3) on the walking mechanics in adolescents with idiopathic lumbar and thoraco-lumbar scoliosis.
