Studies of the structural changes in bone in relation to mineral salt metabolism in birds have becn limited to observation of the changes associated with egg-laying. Somc years ago I observed that certain captive birds (Paridae) had very weak legs during the molt. They could not perch a t night in the usual manner but mere always found sitting on the floor of the cage. They often died during this period. These obscrvatioiis suggested that feather formation may also affect the skelseton in birds. The cyclical nature of antler formation in deer suggests that correlated changes in the compact bone may take place in these mammals, and data on a white-tailed deer have theref ore been included. The work was carried out in the anatomy laboratory of the Chicago Xatiiral History Nuseum. Thanks are due the Museum for the privilege of working on the collections, and especially to membcrs of the staff D. D. Davis, A. L. Rand, and Rainer Zangerl for their much-appreciated assistance. Harold Hansen, of the Ilslinois Natural History Survey, provided material from Labrador specimens.
