Hans Westerbeek and Aaron Smith use trend analysis to project what will occur in the near and extended future for the business of professional sport. Using these trends, they lead the reader through the history of sport and sport enterprise to today’s electronic world and then into the projected future of sport, especially the marketing of sport. An abbreviated history of sport is presented in chapter 1. The authors acknowledge that sport and recreation have grown together. They contend, however, that,“sport has always been a business and always will be”(p. 2). In describing the direction of sport, the authors use a report published by the United States National Intelligence Council in December of 2000 to illustrate that the drivers of change have “allowed globalization to spread almost unfettered”(p. 3). The drivers referred to are economy, technology, social conscience, resources and natural environment, demography, governance, conflict and war, and religion and cultural identity. Each driver is discussed in general terms and then in terms of how it might affect sport.
