This month’s featured study group will be the Antiemetic Subcommittee chaired by Fausto Roila, M.D. Dedicated to the elimination of nausea and vomiting induced by chemotherapy and radiotherapy, this group of clinicians formed a subcommittee in 1995 to organize a consensus conference on the use of antiemetics which convened in Perugia, Italy, April 24-29, 1997. During the meeting, available evidence to date concerning the treatment to prevent chemotherapy and radiotherapy induced emesis was reviewed. The work of this subcommittee in later years has involved continued collaboration in the formation of an antiemetic consensus document in which the recommendations for antiemetic prophylaxis published by ASCO, MASCC, ESMO, NCCN, ASHP, etc. were incorporated. Most recently, the focus has been the evaluation of antiemetic prescriptions and their effectiveness in a difficult treatment situation, delayed emesis. Dr. Roila has provided a brief glimpse into this international drug utilization study. Additionally, a preliminary program overview of the 15th International Symposium on Supportive Care in Cancer will be included at the end of this article. Take some time to review this schedule, and plan to attend as many sessions as possible.
