LZHEIMER'S disease, presenile and senile dementia, cerebral arteriosclerosis," hardening of the arteries" and" senility" are some of the medical and lay terms used during this century to describe memory and intellectual losses in the aged. 1 From this confusing past certain useful clinical and pathological definitions have emerged. Clinically the patient is said to be in a state of dementia when there is a general loss of intellectual ability which interferes with social or occupational functioning. Memory, judgment, and abstract thought are impaired, and changes in personality also occur. 2 The causes of dementia may be primary, due to diseases originating in the brain, or secondary, due to processes which are systemic in nature or which affect the brain by extension from the non-neural cranial contents. Many secondary causes are diagnosable and treatable. 3 Most dementia in the elderly is primary dementia, and by far the largest cause of primary dementia is Alzheimer's disease, also known as senile dementia of the Alzheimer type. This condition accounts for roughly half of all dementia in people over age sixty-five. 4
