Abstract Lowland rice or plants grown in aquatic environments have been reported to show some characteristic features regarding the uptake of radioactive fission products, particularly Cs-137 in connection with submerged soil condition 0–4). In addition, from the point of radio-ecological view 1–131 is one of the most important radioactive nuclide among the fission products because of high fission yield and high biological availability, and special attention has been paid on the local problems on nuclear facility or a reactor accident as in the case of Windscale in 1957 (5). In this connection, the retention and uptake of 1–131 by foliage have been studied by several investigators (6–10).
