EXTREME SHORT STATURE not only imposes physical limitations, it can affect psychosocial adjustment as well. Until recently, opportunities for correction of short stature were limited because, for practica! purposes, human growth hormone was available only for patients with documented growth hormone deficiency. This constraint was dictated by the limited supply of hGH extracted from human cadaver pituitary glands because only GH of human origin is effective in humans. With advances in hGH purification techniques and genetic engineering, the supply of hGH is beginning to increase. Therefore, physicians can expect an increasing number of families to seek hormone treatment for children with short stature. Although the advisability of such treatment is controversial if the child does not have a clearly defined condition, physicians caring for children and adolescents will be asked to help make informed
