RESULTSWeight of the Rat and the Gastric Secretion. Fig. 1 shows the general regression line of the total acid output in mEqj4 hours on weight in grams of the male rat; this line was fitted to the data from 137 individual observations by the method of the least squares30• The problem had been studied in five groups, each group successively increasing in weight by 20 gram increments in the range from 101 to 200 grams (post-starvation weight). Since the regression coefficient and the correlation coefficient of the general regression line are highly significant with a probability for null hypothesis less than 0.01 (Table 1), the conclusion is warranted that total acid output in the rat increases with an increase in body weight. The mean values for total acid output of each weight group fell almost exactly on the general regression line, and F test for significance of the difference of the means from general regression showed that the small deviations from regression were not significant (Table 1). The scattergram (Fig. 1) shows very wide individual variations from regression in total acid output. The standard error of estimate of a single observation expressed as per cent of the mean for the entire group of 137 rats was found to be 42.9%. This indicates how hazardous it would be to draw any conclusions from
