InEscherichia coli, spermidine inhibits the synthesis of protein and stimulates turnover degradation of protein, thus making more amino acids available. Measuring the periodate sensitivity of tRNA from spermidine-treated cells, we have shown that spermidine treatment leads to the formation of an amino acid pool of sufficient size to lead to charging of the tRNA. We propose that the stimulation of RNA synthesis by spermidine in amino acid-starved cells (Raina & Cohen, 1966) can be accounted for by the sparing of amino acids.
