The authors interviewed adults and children in the subtropical montane forests of northwestern Argentina, in an attempt to assess their degree of botanical knowledge. Four localities, representing a gradient of progressive geographic isolation were sampled. One hundred and eighty-one species of different categories of use were mentioned (72 cultivated and 109 wild). The isolation gradient did not show any effect on the number of species mentioned. Except for medicinal plants, children mentioned at least as many species as did adults. The results suggest that the less isolated villages may be as important for conservation of ethnobotanical knowledge as very isolated ones. Children should be considered in ethnobotanical studies because of their potential for obtaining high quality botanical information, with a relatively low sampling effort.
