The introduction of iminunohistocheniistry into tieurotransniitter research ((kiien ct (11. 1969) has opened up new possibilities to idcntify atid localize nionoartiinc rieurotis. In the present study we have used antibodics to phenylethanolatnirie-N-methyltransferase (PNMT). the enxyrtie cotivcriing noradrenaline to adrerialine. in; in attempt to trace the possililc cellular localization of this erizyine in the rat hain with the indirect iniruunofluorescence technique.. A specific staining of certain neurotis was obtained after incubation with anti-serutn to PNMT followed by incubation with flttorescciti isothiocyanate corijugatrd nntibodies. The~(311 bor1ic. r were localized iii two groups in the medulla obloiig: ita.’l’he first onc (Group C1) was localized in the\witrolateral rcticular formation oi the rostl-nl ttiedulla oblongata laterally of the olivary coiriples arid caudal to the nucleus 11. farialis (Fig. 1). This distribution is very similar to the cxtecholaniine cell bodic~ s in the rostral part of group. 41. The second cell group (Croup C2) was also found at the rostral level of the medulla oblongata niainly surrounding the medial part of tlre Lrentral surface of the fourth ventricle..
