It is now generally accepted that under certain conditions the macrophage can express effector cell function toward a variety of neoplastic cells (1,2). Current evidence indicates that the macrophage tumoricidal response is initiated and/or augmented by a T cell product, denoted as macrophage activating factor or MAF (3–7). MAF is thought to alter or “prime” the macrophage in such a way as to make it responsive to a second or “triggering” signal which ultimately activates the tumoricidal potential of the cell (8–12).
