Eighteen patients with ataxia telangiectasia were studied for evidence of autoimmune phenomena. Forty-five per cent (8/18) were positive for one or more of the following autoantibodies: antithyroglobulin, antismooth muscle, antiparietal cell, antistriated muscle, antitubular basement membrane, antimitochondria, antibile canaliculi, and anti-IgG. The similarity of certain of the clinical and laboratory features of patients with ataxia telangiectasia to those found in animals thymectomized at birth suggests that the thymus may play a role in the development of autoimmune phenomena, either directly or secondarily by predisposing to chronic infection with an as yet unknown agent.
