We are interested in studying conformational effects in alicyclic radicals by means of ESR spectroscopy1" 3 and now wish to report our results on the bridgehead decalin radicals. The obvious approach4 to these tertiary radicals, by photolysis of the isomeric bridgehead ferf-butoxy peresters, was unsuccessful. 5 Hydrogen atom abstraction from pure cis-and fra/w-decalin with photo-lytically generated re/7-butoxy radicals yielded the desired bridgehead radicals, which we observed byESR spectroscopy. Analyses of these spectra suggest that the radicals are nonplanar and distinguishable.
