Bacteria and fungi capable of degrading EPTC were isolated from soil which had received four annual applications of the herbicide, using an enrichment technique. The 29 EPTC-degrading fungal isolates belonged to 11 taxa, of whichFusarium oxysporumwas the most frequent. After 15 months storage on nutrient agar at 4 °C, 24 of the isolates degraded significant amounts of EPTC.Paecilomyces, PenicilliumandDiheterosporawere the most efficient decomposers. Of 110 bacterial isolates, 9 degraded significant amounts of EPTC after 3 months storage, but none degraded EPTC after 15 months. The loss of EPTC-degrading ability by the bacteria is attributed to the loss of plasmids carrying the genes for EPTC decomposition.
