Systematic studies of series of patients with idio pathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) revealed that the occurrence of human antiplatelet antibodies that affect platelet function is a rather common event: Clancy et al 1 detected abnormal platelet function in 9 of 11 (82%) patients with chronic ITP, Cortelazzo et al 2 did so in 18 of 49 (37%) ITP patients in remission, whereas Yanabu et al 3 found inhibition of platelet function in 12 of 60 (20%) and enhanced platelet aggregation with plasma from 8 of 60 (13%) ITP patients.
