original anthology, in Finland there was Pekka Gronow, a former director of the Finnish National Sound Archives of the National Library of Finland, independent scholar Toivo Tamminen, and folklorist Juha Niemelä, who published numerous sound recordings and articles. In the United States, Joyce E. Hakala and Paul Niemisto each published books. Leary, an expert on the ethnic music of the upper Midwest, included a lot of Finnish American material in his publications. He mentions many other musicians and scholars involved in preserving and promoting this music. This book provides an important service to Finnish Americans who today generally do not speak Finnish. In translating these songs, the editors have discovered deeper meanings and the significant cultural contexts of the songs. It makes it possible for these songs to be performed again on both sides of the Atlantic, bringing back reflections of immigrant life. The result is something far more than a mere tunebook. It is one of the best scholarly books on Finnish American music and sheds considerable light on American ethnic music in general. Carl Rahkonen Indiana University of Pennsylvania
