The plasticizing effect of an aqueous sodium silicate solution of low concentration (0.3 – 0.4%) on the properties of a low-cement refractory castable is studied. The merits of using sodium silicate, rather than the conventional sodium tripolyphosphate, for plasticizing sintered refractory castables are emphasized.
