The induction of angiogenesis is a nearly universal feature of solid malignancies, and therapeutic strategies that specifically inhibit this process have now entered the clinical arena. Colorectal cancers are highly angiogenic and were the first tumor type to exhibit significant responses to anti-angiogenic therapy. Multiple genetic and environmental stimuli induce the angiogenic phenotype. The characterization of these molecular pathways as well as their complex interactions is rapidly evolving, and a more comprehensive understanding is essential to optimize therapeutic approaches.
