Abstract Previous research indicates that men have a greater tendency than women to perceptually distort women′s friendliness as sexiness. Abbey (1991) and Shotland (1989, 1992) have suggested that misperceptions may have important implications for acquaintance rape. Tenets of a theory of the role of misperception in sexual harassment are outlined. First, relations of the tendency to misperceive with sexual harassment supportive beliefs and attitudes are examined. Second, factors influencing misperception are discussed. Finally, moderating and mediating aspects of the misperception construct for predicting certain forms of sexual harassment are outlined. Misperception theory is discussed within the context of existing theories of sexual harassment.
