A rapid and accurate flame photometric method has heen developed for the determination of strontium in portland cement. The instrument used is the Beck-man DU flame photometer with photomultiplier attachment, using the oxyhydrogen flame. No prior chemical separations are performed, and the strontium is therefore determined in the presence of from 150 to 3000 times as much calcium. The emission at 461 mg, minus the emission at 466 mg, is shown to be a measure of the strontium present. Data on the strontium content of cement were obtained by analyzing 128 cements collected from 30 states and 2 foreign countries. The values obtained ranged from 0.02 to 0.39%, calculated as strontium oxide. More than half the cements contained from 0.03 to 0.10% strontium oxide, with 0.05% as the modal value, 0.10% as the median, and 0.14% as the mean.
