hepatocytes may provide temporary liver support for patients with reversible hepatic failure and function as a bridge for liver transplantation. Such a device should remove toxic substances as well as supply useful biological compounds. To be useful clinically, however, it must be able to function effectively for a reasonable period of time. For the development of a HAL an appropriate cell source (pig or human) is required, as well as establishing a cell culture technique capable of expressing adequate hepatic function. It is necessary to design a bioreactor (artificial liver module) and to develop an extracorporeal circulation device. From an engineering viewpoint, a HAL can be viewed as a micro-plant that uses hepatocytes as biocatalysts in a model resembling a scaled down version of a large petrochemical plant.
