The metabolic clearance and interconversion rates of estrone (E1) and estradiol-17β (E2β) have been measured in sheep using constant infusion techniques and sampling arterial blood. In 6 ewes the mean (±SEM) MCR for E1 is 91 ± 3 1 of blood/day/kg and the mean (95% confidence limits) [ρ]1,β β,βis 0.138 (0.102-0.187). In 4 ewes the mean MCR for E2β is 87 α 7 1 of blood/day/kg and the mean [ρ]1,β β,β is 0.156 (0.11_ 0.221). There is no significant difference between these MCR's and [ρ]β,β values. For both steroids there appears to be a high degree of extra-splanchnic metabolism. The conversion of each steroid to estradiol-17α has also been measured and the results suggest that the conversion of estradiol-17β to estradiol- 17α occurs to some extent through pathways not involving the blood pool of free estrone.
