MATERIALS AND METHODSThe present report is based on experiments on 42 specimens of four different electric fish species, Eigenmannia virescens, Sternarchus albifrons, Sternopygus sp. and Hypopomus sp. All specimens were IO-18 cm. long.The general experimental procedure was similar to that described in a previous paper (12). The fish was anesthetized with tricaine methanesulfonate(MS-222)(1 part per 150,000) and Sternarchus was, in addition, curarized with 0.03 mg. d-tubocurarinelg. fresh weight. Unlike other electric fish, the discharge of the electric organ of this species is not reduced or abolished by curare. This was expected as the electric organ in Sternarchus is a modified neurite (1). The immobilization by curare considerably facilitated recording with microelectrodes.
