This paper represents one phase of a study of patterns of neuropil in the central nervous system in which the authors are engaged. The varying configurations of neuropil fields which have been demonstrated by the older anatomists, and the repetition of certain patterns amongst nuclei of presumably comparable function, suggest relationships between fine structure and function. The over-all project is predicated on the assumption that the transformations undergone by impulse patterns in the neuraxis are largely determined by the characteristics of the circuitry they traverse. Representative areas of grey matter are studied in attempts to delineate as clearly as possible the topography and interrelationships of cell bodies and dendritic nets. Correlative roles of neuroglia and blood vessels are stressed in attempts to construct total concepts of the histological substrate in which essential transforms occur. It is obvious that anatomical techniques represent but one avenue of approach to the problem. The inferior olive was selected as an example of a highly structured relay nucleus. The spatial orientation of its cells and dendrite arbors are quite constant, and its axonal and dendritic fields are among the most complicated in the nervous
