Most of the research reports themselves are much more up to date than the workshop dates would suggest-obviously the authors were able to write the final drafts for publication some months after the meeting. This is of course an advantage to the reader. The research reports deal almost exclusively with cellular and/or subcellular aspects of the disease. Studies reported include: survival after treatment with various DNA-damaging agents, base-damage repair after exposure to ionizing radiation and to chemicals, induction and repair of single-and double-strand breaks, effects on the rate of DNA synthesis after exposure to ionizing radiation, and mutation induction by ionizing radiation. The questions of whether heterozygotes are radiosensitive and whether they are predisposed to cancer are discussed with the conclusion that heterozygotes are indeed at risk in both cases. One area that will cause considerable confusion to the reader is the role of defective DNA repair in the etiology of the disease. Those reporting on other aspects of ataxia-telangiectasia are also obviously confused about this issue and the reading of all of the research papers on the subject in this book does little to alleviate the situation. Unfortunately this confusion accurately reflects the current situation in the field and it will be necessary for those interested in this problem to keep abreast of the literature to see how it is resolved. The book is an excellent reflection of the current status of the field. Not only is it a valuable and convenient means for those not presently working on ataxia-telangiectasia to assess the present status of research in the field but also for those active in one area of it to appreciate the current research in other areas.
