This publication is another volume in the International Series on Biomechanics. It is a compilation of 100 papers from the 9th International Congress of Biomechanics that was held at the University of Waterloo in Canada, 1983. The book is divided into four sections. The first is titled" Occupational Biomechanics" and contains 15 articles that primarily pertain to loading of the human spine. The eight papers on the spine include original investigations and mathematical modeling, while the remaining seven cover a wide range of other occupationally related topics. The second section of the book," Evaluation of Sports Protective Equipment," comprises 17 articles related to sport equipment design and it pertains to injury prevention and comfort, and stresses experienced by the body during selected activities. Sport shoe design is the focus of most papers in this section. Other equipment reported on in this section include the safety helmet and ski bindings. Section 3," Measurement Techniques and Data Processing," is a presentation of papers that employ unique measuring techniques, discuss measurement technique concerns, describe applications for biomechanics of state of the art technology, and describe mathematical models. Included are reports on a force shoe, ultrasonic quantification of the arch, on-line motion analysis with the reflective marker CoSTEL system, and EMG in water and air.The last section," Sport Biomechanics," is a compilation of 48 articles that cover a wide variety of sport activities. The section is subdivided into running, gymnastics and diving, jumping, water propulsion, and other activities. Distance running is covered extensively in the first subdivision, these studies ranging from efficiency of running to a computer simulation of running. Also included are papers on hurdling and the sprint start. The gymnastics and diving subdivision primarily includes analyses of airborne movements in both activities. In the jumping section, papers are presented on the deep knee bend, squat exercise, and vertical jump, as well as sporting activities such as high jumping, triple jumping, and pole vaulting. The water propulsion section comprises four studies that investigate various aspects of rowing and the design of rowing equipment, and two investigations of swimming. The last subdivision is a mixture of 12 biomechanical reports on the hammer throw, baseball throw, tennis serve, soccer, cycling, and speed skating. This volume contains many useful papers by authors from several countries. It is recommended for persons interested in sport biomechanics and closely related fields.
