MethodsClinical and experimental studies were identified by performing a PubMed and EMBASE database search using the following term:(anticoagulation OR noac OR vka OR warfarin OR dabigatran OR apixaban OR rivaroxaban OR edoxaban) AND (intracerebral hemorrhage OR cerebral hemorrhage OR hematoma expansion) and as a secondary search term for experimental studies:(animal OR mouse OR rat OR pig OR rabbit OR dog OR guinea pig OR cat)(Figure 1). Date limits were applied starting in 2010 with the introduction of DOACs. In addition, studies were chosen from the reference lists of the selected articles. All publications were evaluated by the authors for relevance in regard to the primary objective of this review. Only studies reporting values for initial volume of primary ICH at hospital admission were included. Additionally, we included meta-analyses of these studies. Exclusion criteria were cerebral microbleeds and traumatic or other secondary ICH. Studies only reporting on VKA or DOACs (without comparisons) were not considered. The last literature search was conducted on December 11, 2018.
