The rejection of rat skin transplants but not circulating cells of rat bone marrow origin occurred in over 50% of the long-term surviving mouse-rat chimeras. The chimeras were induced by exposure to lethal doses of X-irradiation, followed by rat bone marrow injections. Mice reverting to a completely nontolerant state were found to have a high titer of hemagglutinins to rat red blood cells. Those animals that rejected only the skin grafts had no detectable hemagglutinins, although some were able to form antibodies of mouse origin against sheep red blood cells. Three possible explanations for these findings are offered.
