A nine point rating scale with a highly standardized protocol for assessing the continuum behavioral effects of amphetamine (e.g. hyperactivity, stereotypy, dyskinetic-reactive effects) in rats is described. Dose-response curves for d- and 1-amphetamine were obtained demonstrating a 4: 1 potency ratio of d- to 1-. The capability of the rating scale to assess antagonism of d-amphetamine by pimozide suggested that this scale may be a useful quantitative measure of neuroleptic activity of drugs.
