This short monograph is a worked-out version of the lecture notes for a summer seminar course delivered at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 1986. The same course was delivered at Tokai University (Japan) in 1987 and the present text, which has been completed by a brief description without proofs of some results obtained after delivery of the seminar course, can still be used nowadays for a rather self-contained graduate course in which a variety of methods are presented. The last chapter is devoted to a brief exposition of some topics, related to those discussed in the lecture notes, which have become prominent over the past 30 years. The text concludes with some open questions on compactness of trajectories, which may become one of the main challenges for future research in the field.
