Although efforts are currently under way to clarify the role of dietary intake and/or supplement use in the development of neural tube defects in man, clear associations have not yet been made. Most studies have examined dietary intake/supplements immediately prior to or shortly after conception. However, it is possible that a state of chronic malnutrition contributes to these defects rather than an acute deficiency near the time of conception. In some women, dietary supplementation may override the effects of chronic malnutrition, thus preventing neural tube defects from occurring. Because of the limitations of studies conducted to date, a recent report by the Institute of Medicine (USA) concluded that there is a lack of evidence supporting the recommendation that multivitamin supplements be used periconceptionally to prevent neural tube defects. It is not known if the improvement of the quality of a woman's diet or the taking of a multivitamin supplement either prior to conception or early in pregnancy can reduce the risk of having an infant with a neural tube defect.
