The monotypic genus Metronectes Sharp, 1882 was erected for Agabus aubei Perris. It is here ranked as a subgenus of Agabus Leach, 1817, for exclusion of A. aubei very probably renders Agabus paraphylectic. Larval and adult features supporting this hypothesis are discussed in detail. All (LI‐LIII) larval instars of A. aubei are described for the first time. A. aubei is a montane species which inhabits mats of phanerogamous plants growing on steep rocks over which water flows. Species inhabiting such situations are referred to as the phanerofluicolous fauna. A. aubei shows morphological adaptations to this crawling and burrowing mode of life: e.g. stout antennae and reduction of swimming hairs in the adults, as well as short and stout larvae with short urogomphi. The systematic position of A. aubei is discussed. It is probably part of, or closely related to, the subgenus Dichonectes of Agabus the species of which are rheobiotic.
