Endometriosis is a common gynaecological disorder that often presents with infertility and pelvic pain. Three different phenotypes of endometriosis disease have been identified: peritoneal endometriosis, ovarian endometriosis (or endometrioma), and rectovaginal endometriotic lesions. The precise pathophysiological basis of these three different types of the disorder is not clear. In the present review chapter, we make an attempt to analyze recent genomics and proteomics data to put forward some novel leads regarding the molecular basis of endometriosis. Further, we highlight a few important translational implications of the newly accrued knowledge on endometriosis.
