Weakness in patients with acquired myasthenia gravis results from several immunopathologic mechanisms at the neuromuscular junction initiated by autoantibodies directed against the nicotinic receptor for acetylcholine.'4 The mechanisms responsible for the emergence of antibodies to acetylcholine receptor (anti-AChR) and other autoantibodies in patients with myasthenia gravis are not understood? V6 We and others have been interested in using in vitro cultures of lymphocytes from several immune compartments to study cellular interactions that might be iplportant in the control of anti-AChR and immunoglobulin synthesis in patients with MG. We would like to review our studies of in vitro synthesis of IgG and anti-AChR by cell suspensions from blood and thymus of patients with MG. We will try to interpret these studies in the context of work by others.
