[en] The composition of the products of carbothermal reduction of Sc 2 O 3 is examined by X-ray diffraction and chemical analysis and by the hydrolysis method. At pressures of 10-2-1 Pa, the reaction starts in the temperature region of 1000-1200 o C. The first product is Sc 2 OC of NaCl type; at 1 Pa and 1400-1500 o C this substance is formed quantitatively (according to stoichiometry) within 50-100 h, repeated homogenization, however, is necessary, or else Sc 2 OC reacts locally with Sc 2 O 3 giving Sc 2 O 1+ x C 1-x. The lattice parameter of Sc 2 OC in the presence of Sc 15 C 19 is 457.6 3 pm. At temperatures above 1500 o C, Sc 15 C 19 is incompletely formed by subsequent reaction with carbon. The product melts at cca. 1800 o C; carbon dissolves and the final composition approaches ScC 2. Carbon separates during solidification. The phase fractionsin the products are affected by evaporation, the vapour pressures above both Sc 2 OC and Sc 15 C 19 being comparable with the pressure requisite for the carboreduction process. The results are discussed with respect to the often ambiguous published data.(Author)
